I've just had a moment where I realised a lot of the problems I had way back when with Medusa's shading was caused by poor gamma correction.
I applied the SSS Shader to my model and rendered it, and instantly those areas were blown out and looked awful. By using Gamma Correction nodes set to .454 I can correct the Gamma issues. Giving this rather nice render. (To go back to the Medusa point, her renders looked amazing without any shaders, I loved them. But the moment I put on Mental Ray shaders, things started going tits up... My lighting was getting blown out. Now I'm learning :P

Linear / Non-Linear workflow depends upon lighting method. What kind of lighting are you using?
